Harvey’s at Union Station has opened a new food outlet geared toward satisfying the appetites of younger families with kids and other visitors who want to grab a quick, easy bite to eat.
The new Harvey’s Whistle Stop Market is located in space formerly occupied by a delicatessen next to the full-service restaurant on the south side of the lobby.
It uses original recipes by Fred Harvey, the founder of the legendary Harvey House restaurant chain, for its menu.
“We’re growing younger and we asked ‘what do we do for food for kids?'” said George Guastello, CEO and president of Union Station.
“We felt we ned a place where parents could come and go.”
Andrew Brancato, president of the firm that runs Harvey’s, said the new Whistle Stop space has been a hit since it opened March 6, with sales up 100- to 200 percent from the previous deli operation.
“Over the years, we saw a need for more fast, casual dining,” he said. “We wanted to meet the needs of businesses in the (Union Station) space as well as travelers and families.”
In addition to the original Harvey sandwich and soup recipes, other local favorites include Guy’s potato chips, Cherry Mash and Volomilk candies, and Shatto milk. And while the former deli pizza oven no longer bakes pizza, it does crank out meatball calzones.
Hours are from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. Brancato said the goal is to have the Whistle Stop serving breakfast and open on Sundays as well soon.
