City Club Apartments Open

The introduction of the streetcar is one reason why more people like living downtown. The new City Club Apartment development is right on the line.

The City Club Apartments, a sprawling development that revived much of a key Crossroads block, is beginning to accept residents and plans to announce its new restaurant tenant soon.

The $76.8 million project by Detroit-based City Club is opening its 283 apartments in phases with the first 17 units delivered a couple weeks ago and residents already moving in.

A new DGX convenience store recently opened on the first floor.

The development occupies much of the block from 19th to 20th streets, between Main and Walnut, and is located on the streetcar line. It’s also next door to Affäre restaurant. It rebuilt what had been a dormant section of the Crossroads.

“I think the concept of the building taking up almost an entire city block with amenities including retail and a restaurant is a cool one,” said Norm Caldwell, senior director of sales and marketing for City Club.

City Club Apartments is opening in phases with the units overlooking Main first up for leasing.

“The concept and its execution worked beautifully.”

The project had been in the works for several years and broke ground in September 2018. It involved not only the construction of a new seven-story apartment building, but the renovation of the old Midwest Hotel at 1925 Main St.

The development also will be opening a restaurant and wine bar in a building going up on the site of the former Hereford House, a popular steakhouse at 20th and Main that was destroyed in an arson fire in 2008.

Caldwell said the restaurant and wine bar, along with the DGX store, was part of a strategy to have businesses located at the development catering to residents.

“We have the DGX which is perfect for residents and the restaurant will be a place where residents can eat multiple times a week,” he said.

A second floor courtyard still under construction opens from the development club room.

“It’s a phenomenal operator who’s been very successful in Kansas City.”

The second floor club room is mostly complete and is expected to open in early September. It connects to a courtyard that provides views of the downtown skyline. The swimming pool is expected to open by the end of September.

The entire City Club Apartments development should be completed by early 2021.

Apartment rents range from studios starting at $1,190 per month; one bedrooms starting at $1,445; two-bedrooms starting at $2,055, and three-bedrooms starting at $4,016.

City Club Apartments is part of a boom in apartment construction occurring in the Crossroads.

The City Club concierge desk in the lobby will be staffed after-hours to assist residents.

It’s across the street from the new 132-unit REVERB apartment project, 126-unit ARTerra at 21st and Wyandotte and a few blocks from the 341-unit Artistry apartments going up at 19th and Oak.

Caldwell said City Club’s emphasis on hospitality, including after-hours concierge service at the front desk, will distinguish his property along with the DGX and restaurant within the development and directly accessible to residents.
