This year’s 816 Day scheduled for Monday (Aug. 16) is trying something new, a downtown scavenger hunt paired with Bingo aimed at helping businesses and attractions coping with the Covid pandemic.
“We’re encouraging people to get out and visit local restaurants and other establishments,” said Jared Campbell of the Downtown Council.
“We’re focusing not only on celebrating Kansas City, but participating businesses hit hard by the pandemic.”
The downtown scavenger hunt is currently underway.
Participants can download a Bingo card here, make the rounds of downtown businesses and attractions listed, then bring their cards to a raffle drawing scheduled for Monday at Third and Grand.
Several of the attractions listed on the Bingo card will allow people concerned about the current resurgence of Covid to simply scan a QR code to fill in the appropriate square on their card.
“You can at least get into the raffle for the base level of prizes,” Campbell said.
The drawing will be held after the Art in the Loop music performance featuring Jessica Ayala and Arquesta del SolSoul which runs from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
The 816 Day event is sponsored by the KC Streetcar Authority, Downtown Council and Downtown Neighborhood Association. The event intended to celebrate the city began in 2017 and took off after the City Council formally endorsed it in 2018.
The grand prize for those who fill out all their squares and win the raffle is one night at the Loews Hotel including dinner for two at its Stilwell restaurant.
Those filling in all the perimeter squares can qualify for the raffle drawing for two, $100 gift cards to select downtown establishments. Completing a single row enters participants into a raffle for eight, $50 gift cards.
Participating businesses also will provide $8.16 specials between now and Monday including flower arrangements and plants at EverWild Florals, 909 Walnut, Suite 100, and funny and unique socks by Foot Traffic at Michael’s Fine Clothing, 1830 Main.
