The city’s newest civic celebration, 816 Day, will focus on downtown again this Friday with the City Market and the Power & Light District as anchor locations.
The event got the official seal of approval at City Hall last year when the Council passed a resolution endorsing it, and was originally launched by the Downtown Neighborhood Association at a small gathering at the now-defunct Homeslice pizzeria three years ago.
“This is another opportunity to celebrate the spirit of Kansas City, and all the excitement and revitalization we’ve seen downtown,” said Jared Campbell, DNA president.
The event will feature live entertainment and “816” deals at downtown businesses.
The City Market will host aerial and “acro-yoga” performances by Voler at 6:16 and 7:16 p.m. At 8:16 p.m., Kemet the Phantom will drop his latest album on the outdoor stage, according to the DNA.
The Strawberry Swing indie craft fair also will be at the Market featuring 10 makers.
The Power & Light District is using 816 Day as an opportunity to showcase its new PNC Family Plaza area. From 5 to 9 p.m., The plaza will host its first POP Social. The event will include the launch of a new product from Boulevard Brewing, Chill Vibes Sour Ale with Cucumber.
There will also be live music by Mitch Prather, yard games, raffle prizes and popsicles by KC Pop Co.
“816 Day is a day to celebrate Kansas City and the Power & Light District has become a huge part of downtown,” said Rachel Waller, marketing director for the entertainment district.
“We wanted to celebrate our new community space and came up with the idea for POP Social and thought it would be funny happy hour we can do every week.
“We’re launching it on 816 Day and continuing through Oct. 18.”
There also will be a Coors Light Block Party with Galantis at the KC Live! Block for patrons 21 and older from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The Kansas City Public Library also will host Movies on the Wall with a free showing of “Mars Attacks!” at 8:45 p.m. Doors open at 8 p.m.
